In case you missed it, Honey Mag did a really great Q and A with Richgirl a little while back. The interview covers a lot of ground, and gives each of the girls a chance to go on at length about (among other things) what inspires them, the challenges that “girl groups” face, and what it’s like to work with Rich Harrison. See below for the Q and A.

Honey: RichGirl is an interesting name, what’s the meaning behind it?

Brave: Well our name is a metaphor. It has nothing to do with finances or money. It just has everything to do with being rich in spirit and being rich in faith. Being strong and knowing that there’s power in femininity. Because taking control of that power and embracing it will make you rich.

Honey: Okay, I can dig it. But you guys wouldn’t mind being rich in pocket either, right?

Lyndriette: (laughs) That can work too.

Honey: So if there are four of you in a group, why keep the name singular?

Lyndriette: Because it represents more than just our group. Every girl can be a RichGirl. I think it was a good idea to keep it that way even though everyone always messes it up (laughs). We just kept it singular so that any girl could use it.

Honey: Ahh, makes sense. Is it coincidence that a piece of your founder’s name is in it as well?

Brave: Well me and Rich came up with the name and when the idea came up, it meant a lot. You can always put it with the obvious fact of Rich Harrison and there’s a couple things you can play off of, but ultimately it was so profound because of the deeper meaning behind it.

Honey: Dope. Now, we’ve seen so many solo stars come out of girl groups. What made you guys want to be a part of a group instead of pursuing individual deals?

Seven: Before this group we were all actually pursuing solo deals, but I feel like I speak for all of us because when Rich presented the opportunity, we just believed in it so much. We’re still able to express who we are individually, everybody gets to sing and that’s really important to us. It was just a good vibe all around, so none of us turned it down

Audra: Since we were all pursuing solo deals, prior to coming together, everybody traveled from the south and east coast to get to L.A. because it’s the hub for music. So I would be in different recording studios and see Seven at the same studio all the time and I would see Brave and her big blonde curly hair at different industry events. I approached Brave and spoke to her several times and Seven has actually wrote a song for Lyndriette when they were younger. Seven was doing background vocals and Lyn was on the leads. It’s funny too because that song favors the sound on the types of records we’d produce today. So Rich put the pieces of the puzzle together, but it made it all the more easier that we already had friendships and chemistry.

Honey: Gotcha, so he hand-picked you guys?

Audra: Exactly and he took his time. It was a couple years of a process for him to put together. We were the type to be at every event possible, at every studio possible…any opportunity that arose. So we had been around each other because we all had that same drive and saw that in the other. It’s kind of cool how it worked out.

Honey: Definitely. But it’s sad because we’ve seen so many girl groups break up, why do you think you’ll stay together?

Lyndriette: For one, we are very strong in our faith. We all are Christians and pray together. And the most important thing to us is believing in God and what He can do for us. [Being in RichGirl is] just like in a relationship, if you’re going through things, you talk about them.  We settle it, we hash it out. There’s no holding things in for a long time and I think that’s how problems occur. But we have communication and we have faith and I think that’s what’s going to keep us together.

Honey: You got that. People often feel loyalty to a particular girl group, with so many out right now, do you think it’s a disadvantage?

Seven: We don’t think they should look at us more than they look at anyone else. I think it’s all about the vibe of the person and the type of music they get into. If they like Electrik Red than that’s cool, they like Electrik Red, or Sophia Fresh or any kind of group.  If they like RichGirl and they like vocals and everything that we bring, then they like us. We really don’t feel like they have to choose. Or they can like all of us at the same time. We don’t really look at it as a bad thing.

Honey: Do you have any girl groups out that you like then?

Brave: I think I speak for the group when I say we were ecstatic when we found out En Vogue was getting back together. We are totally just huge fans of them and for us En Vogue is just a huge inspiration. Not to say we built our group around that, but that’s probably one of the closest groups — other than the Spice Girls — that we, maybe not emulate… but En Vogue had four lead singers and we have four lead singers and they were just very classy. So I say them.

Honey:

Nice choice. Okay, so we know you guys are rich girls, but what makes you Honey girls?

Seven: I think Brave is a Honey girl because she just looks like honey. (laughs) She’s so sweet!

Brave: I say Lyndriette is a Honey girl because she attracts so many bees. (laughs)

Seven: I think that Audra is a Honey girl because her vocals are just so syrupy (laughs).

Lyndriette: Seven is a Honey girl because any dress she wears looks like she got poured into like a bottle of honey (laughs). And RichGirl are Honey girls because we’re sweet and we’re honest (laughs).

Honey: No, “because all the boys want a taste?” (laughs)

Lyndriette: (laughs) No comment.

The Fader recently sat down to do a profile of the girls, where they talked about their songwriting process, the true meaning of the name “Richgirl”, Audra’s lifetime goal to annoy Brave, and much more. Check out the video below!
